Why Retail, Again?

This question is so funny to me, mainly because when I quit my last retail job I swore it off forever. (Like FOREVER!!!!!) Retail can be awful. You’re forced to sell items that fall apart in store on a regular basis to unsuspecting customers; customers are mean to you often for no reason at all; the pay isn’t worth it; and to top it all off you just have to take it, mean customers, cheap products, all of it. So, why retail, you ask? We want to change the standard.

As two people passionate about great interiors, we noticed a gap in the market both as the consumer and as employees of previous retailers.

We want to create a space where both the consumer and employees benefit from quality items and a unique environment. With CxD Home & Company being all online sales we avoid the pushy sales mentality. We are opening a showroom where local clients can feel, use and admire our products in a relaxed environment. Our showroom will not be a retail space instead we're opening a community space where anyone can come and work, enjoy a coffee and hang out. We will have all the products we sell displayed as decor and used for its intended purpose. When I buy an item, I want to know what I’m getting before I take it home. For this reason, you will be able to use the cups for water, the mugs for coffee and the plates for snacks, the towels to dry your hands (none of that non-absorbent nonsense) and maneuver items into the way you would use them before purchasing online. We will have an employee available in case you would like their help with the online order, but otherwise, you get to go home, order from your couch, and receive your items a few days later without the pushy sales people!

We hope to set a new standard in which both the employee and customer benefit equally. We have a strict no BS policy. We won’t be walked all over so leave your bad attitude at the door, drink a coffee and come hang out. All employees will have the right to end the lousy customer stigma. We want nothing but the best for both parties, and we want your day to improve in our space.

We look forward to serving you in whatever regard that may be, and we sincerely hope you join us for coffee in the Fall!

What Makes Us Different?

Home decor can be a very temporary purchase as it changes seasonally and it can cost a lot to keep up with, but we don’t think it should. We don’t want it to cost an arm and a leg to keep up with the ever-changing trends, and we don’t want to sacrifice quality for affordability.

We want to aim to be a solid middle where you get both quality and affordability at the same time. We want to add simplistic items that match your existing decor, and you can display year round. We are bringing in products that have multiple functions, are muted colours, and spark joy (for the Marie Kondo lovers). Buy it as a vase, repurpose it as a candle holder, then turn it into a fish tank. We want our items to stay in your home for a long time, and then be used in someone else’s when you’re finished with it. We are aiming to bring in top quality items that won't fall apart on the way home. We’re bringing products in at a fair price, and trying to order solely from Canadian suppliers. We are focusing on sustainability and reducing waste in every way possible. Your order may come in a not-so-beautiful repurposed cardboard box, but inside it will be beautiful, we promise.

We cannot wait to start on this endeavour. We have already placed our first order, and we’re not-so-patiently awaiting its arrival. We are so excited to show you the CxD Home & Co difference.

Accent Walls

Accent walls are the best. They add character, life and pizzazz to a room while still being an easy task to conquer. I have heard about, talked about and thought about accent walls a lot, but I never had one until earlier this week. I got it in my head that I needed, not wanted - needed, a sparkly wall in my house. A store I frequent had a similar wall and I decided to try it out for myself. I now want to paint the rest of my house to match that one wall, because I love it so much.

I started by picking a paint color. I then taped the surrounding areas, including the floor because I make huge messes. Pro tip: make sure you seal the area you tape. I have a couple leakage spots that I need to fix but were completely preventable. I cut in and then rolled the wall once. I wanted the wall to have texture, and one coat was perfect for the look I was going for. You may want to double up on the paint, but it depends on the look you want. Once the paint was dry, I rolled craft glue onto the wall and threw sparkles at it. I tried a few different methods to add the glam but throwing it was the easiest and gave me the look I wanted. We had a ton of fun throwing the sparkles and making a massive mess and the wall turned out great. I have noticed that the occasional sparkles do fall off the wall, but I might try a spray sealer to see if that helps. If I do end up sealing it, I will post an update.

Since I found the idea in a store I had no direction to follow therefore if you have done something similar in your home, please leave tips and comments below, I have plans to do this in other parts of my home, so all ideas and suggestions are greatly appreciated. I also want to see pictures if you are doing this or have done it already.

P.S. My husband loves it.

Smore Dip

As summer comes to a close I feel like this is the perfect time to share this recipe. S'more dip, my go to this summer because I both love smores and I live in the city and can't have a backyard fire so this was my saving grace all summer and I will continue to use this all year around.

You will need chocolate chips (milk chocolate is my favorite), marshmallows, graham crackers and a glass of milk.

Preheat the oven to 325°F

Fill the bottom of a small pan with milk chocolate chips and top off with marshmallows until your pan is full.

Place in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

Spread on your graham crackers and enjoy perfect smores.

Helpful tip: Dip your crackers directly into the dip if you like to live on the wild side or use a spoon to place some on a plate if you prefer not to burn your hands.

Tables for Turkeys

This year my husband and I have decided to open up our home to everyone who doesn't have somewhere to go for Thanksgiving. I love the idea of having people over for a holiday like that. I spent few holidays alone but the ones that I did I wish there had been somewhere to go to. I love hosting people; it is one of my favourite things.

Another thing I love is table settings. I have no idea why, but every time we had people over, as a child, my mother always got me to set the table. I'm not sure if I loved it before that or not, but I love it now. I can't imagine life without candles, so there are always plenty on the table along with whatever I have found that season that fits. This year I have to start from scratch. Without my mother's collection of candles and trinkets to help me out, I had an excuse to splurge a bit and get a few things I love.

I shopped around a bit before choosing pieces I liked. The antler candle holder was a last year's find at The Bay. The pumpkins are from Aldor Acres and are one of the cheapest ways to decorate. Little pumpkins are anywhere from $0.25 - $3.00, so you can buy lots of them for a little. The table runner and water jugs I found at my new favourite store in Fort Langley called Living Room, and everything else is either from Urban Barn or Chapters.

Shopping for table decor can be so fun but also overwhelming, grab a friend or your husband and have a good time with it. I suggest looking for pieces you can use for multiple seasons. The wooden placemats, from Chapters, can be used in both Fall and Winter and as decoration in Spring and Summer. Pumpkins are pretty seasonal, but they start to get mushy regardless, so it is probably for the better. Table runners can be used all seasons as well, but I would recommend a neutral colour if you plan on keeping it year round.

The decoration aspect is important to me but having an incredible meal with the people I love is the most important. Decor with come and go but family is forever. Have fun with the decor but cherish your family and friends most. Happy Thanksgiving.
